What is VIRTUS doing in

Wustermark?

VIRTUS is building five state-of-the-art data centres that, once completed, will house the servers and computing infrastructure that underpin our daily lives. Data centres are fundamental to the services we rely on every day. Everything that happens on the internet, happens in a data centre. Whether as individuals, businesses, or organisations, we interact with data centres hundreds of times each day.

Why Wustermark? What are the

benefits to me?

We chose Wustermark because of the available space and access to renewable energy.

What are the benefits of having VIRTUS as a neighbour?
We want to be part of the community and support local initiatives in ways that matter to you. We will listen to local priorities and work in partnership with residents, businesses and community organisations.
Positive impact on the local economy
During the construction phase, we will help facilitate thousands of jobs on site. Once operational, the campus will support hundreds of permanent jobs across a wide range of careers and skill sets.
Infrastructure
We will invest in and upgrade local infrastructure, from roads and transport links to faster internet connectivity.
Heating
Once operational, our data centres will make waste heat available for homes, local businesses, and local government facilities.

What is VIRTUS doing for your

Wustermark community?

Wustermark, DE
Information afternoon for residents in Wustermark
VIRTUS, together with 50Hertz Transmission GmbH and GWV-Ketzin, invited residents of the settlement by the substation to an information event. With construction on the campus already under way, VIRTUS wanted to give local residents an early opportunity to learn about the project. Many guests took the opportunity to ask questions and speak directly with the VIRTUS and 50Hertz teams. Holger Schreiber, Mayor of Wustermark, also joined the event. The local volunteer fire department helped create a welcoming atmosphere by hosting a barbecue. VIRTUS thanks everyone who attended for the open and helpful exchange, and looks forward to continuing the dialogue as the project progresses.

Celebrating 220 years of firefighting history together
Two fire department celebrations, two anniversaries. The Wustermark fire department unit celebrated its 120th anniversary on June 6, 2026, while the Hoppenrade unit marked its 100th anniversary on July 4, 2026. Virtus Data Centers supported both events with a financial donation. We would like to extend our special thanks to Mayor Holger Schreiber, Municipal Fire Chief Jürgen Scholz, and the local fire department support associations for their excellent collaboration.

About the Project

Why is VIRTUS building a data centre campus in Wustermark?
Data centres provide a home to services such as streaming, online banking, AI and cloud computing. Wustermark is an ideal location due to its proximity to Berlin, access to a reliable and powerful electricity grid, and access to a surplus of renewable energy from nearby wind parks.
What exactly is being built in Wustermark?
Five data centres, with a combined IT load of 204MW will be constructed. The campus will run exclusively on renewable electricity, and the total investment is valued at approximately EUR 3 billion.
When does construction begin, and when will the campus be ready?
Construction is happening in phases. The groundworks and transformer station construction has already started. Construction of the first data centre is planned to begin in 2026 and become operational in 2028.
Is VIRTUS already active in Germany?
Yes, VIRTUS will be operating a campus in Berlin-Mariendorf. Wustermark is the largest development to date.

Location & Neighborhood

How does the municipality of Wustermark benefit from the data centre?
VIRTUS pays trade tax, contributing to local finances, and can contribute to affordable, eco-friendly district heating. Furthermore, local jobs are being created and the local economy strengthened.
How close is the campus to the municipality of Wustermark?
The campus is in Elstal, a district of Wustermark, about 30 km west of Berlin, with around 10,000 residents. VIRTUS maintains an active relationship with the community.
Will the data centre be visible from outside?
Yes, but the design will integrate with the surroundings.
How many people will work on the campus?
Over 100 jobs will be created once operational. Each direct job creates over six more in the wider supply chain with additional jobs during construction.

Environment & Sustainability

How sustainable is the campus operation?
The campus will use only renewable energy in compliance with the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG). Besides, VIRTUS aims for Net Zero by 2030. Biodiversity measures are implemented with the municipality.
What happens to the waste heat generated during operations?
Waste heat will be made available to existing or future district heating networks as mandated by the EnEfG.
Does the data centre consume large amounts of water?
The campus uses closed-loop cooling, requiring minimal water after initial filling. For more info click here.
Are hazardous materials or pollutants used?
Data centres do not contain hazardous materials, and none are used in construction. All contractors follow German environmental guidelines and are monitored by VIRTUS throughout the works.
How does VIRTUS handle adjacent nature conservation areas?
VIRTUS implements conservation and compensatory measures valued at EUR 2.7 million, including planting, rewilding, and protection of wildlife.

Noise, Light & Operations

Will the data centre cause noise pollution?
VIRTUS will comply with legally permitted noise levels: 55 dB(A) by day and 40 dB(A) by night at the nearest residential area, as required by the urban development agreement. For context, 55 decibels is generally accepted to be a moderate sound level, comparable to a normal conversation or a quiet residential street.
How does the facility operate — is there 24/7 activity?
Yes, operations are run efficiently, with minimal impact on the surrounding area. Security is a priority.

Traffic & Infrastructure

What impact will construction have on traffic?
Heavy goods vehicle traffic will occur during construction. VIRTUS is developing a traffic management plan to limit disruption. Residents will be notified of exceptional impacts.

Transparency & Contact

How does VIRTUS keep the public informed about the project?
A dedicated project page with updates will be launched for the Wustermark campus.
